Even though there are only about 340,000 zero-emission vehicles in California today, the state is on par to reach its goal of 1.5 million by 2025.

This is according to a new report by the group Next 10. “The range of electric vehicles continues to go up and up,” said Noel Perry with the public policy think tank. “And the number of choices that consumers are finding in the showrooms is also going up.”

Perry says if sales increase by 20 percent every year till 2025, the state will meet its target. “Zero-emission vehicles are already priced competitive to gas cars and even in without government subsidies, in some instances, they are competitive,” he said

Last week, Gov. Jerry Brown announced a new goal of having 5 million ZEV's by 2030 in the state. But Perry says that big jump could be hard to fill because of inadequate charging infrastructure.

Brown plans to boost the number of chargers statewide to 250,000 from around 16,500 today.
